Beginning in 1990, the project ¡®Demonstration of intelligent information technology
in agriuclture¡¯, with Agricultural expert system as the key technology,
was initialized and funded by the China Ministry of Science and
Technology. The project aimed to improve agriculture production,
rural area condition, and living level of farmers. A model for information
technology service development for small farmers in different local
conditions inwidespread area was explored. To date, 5 development
platforms for agricultural expert system development were established
by the project, and more than 200 agricultural expert systems were
developed using the 5 platforms. Twenty three demonstration districts
for agricultural expert systems were established in Beijing, Tianjin,
Shandong, Chongqing, Xinjiang, Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, Shanxi,
Shaanxi, Hebei, Henan, Anhui, Sichuan, Hunan, Guangxi, Guizhou,
Hainan, Yunnan, Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, and Gansu provinces of
china, covering more than 800 counties. The total application area
is 3 million ha., increasing grain output by 3 billion kilograms,
earning 2.5 billion RMB$, and saving 700million RMB$ in input. Six
million farmers benefited from the project. More than 200 outstanding
application examples were accumulated. Three development model for
ICT in rural area, 3 application models, and 3 extension models
were produced for different area and different econimic development
levels in china.

To manage water and fertilizer rationally based on
climate, soil and variety
To decide the chemical controlling time and dosage
according to the fruit tree¡¯s growth status and physical index.
